Building intersectional feminist networks of support: A talk and zine making workshop

In this activity, I will discuss the findings from my interviews with members of feminist learning spaces across the United States. In particular, I focus on how members of these spaces grapple with the complexity of intersectionality in attempting to create opportunities for empowerment and skill development.

During the talk, I examine the possibilities and limitations for how feminist learning spaces may advance equity in education more broadly, which I understand as supporting culturally sustaining practices and redistributing resources in favor of marginalized learners I also discuss how feminist learning spaces can use five mechanisms to collaborate across organizational contexts.

Following the talk, I will facilitate a conversation with participants about how we are already engaged in building intersectional feminist learning networks. Participants will then collectively create a zine which documents our discussion and explores the question: What do intersectional feminist networks look like in practice? What are their values? What are their practices? What are their codes of conduct? Who is part of them?

This workshop connects to the theme of Hopepunk in the fostering of discussions on how to build networks for feminism and racial justice, and then we collectively brainstorm and identify how we can work together to sustain these networks into the future.

Erin is the founder of Prototype PGH, a feminist makerspace dedicated to building gender and racial equity through workshops, tech access, and peer support. Erin is also the head of partnerships for PLUS tutoring at Carnegie Mellon University, a math tutoring program that supports low-income middle school students across the United States.
