The long-held idea of images as proof of reality vanished. Washed away by manipulative practices of image production our hyper-visual media streams have become highly subjective and emotional. Authenticity claims to be the new challenge while power structures shift and users become creators. Together we explored the new paradox universe of [technical] images[1]!
[1]Into the Universe of Technical Images Vilém Flusser
This evening was the kick off of a workshop organised together with Froh!
Within two week-ends we will explore the shift of construction and perception of 'truth' in visual culture. Together we look at the role of technical applications within the de-/construction of truth. How can the tools we build and use shape how we publish and consume media? Who can we trust when the concept of truth has vanished? Can ideas of 'subjectivity' replace the notions of objectivity and rationality?

About the speakers:
fanfare is a studio and non-profit platform for graphic design, visual arts and creative pursuits based in Amsterdam. with collaborative mindsets and by initiating and hosting interdisciplinary projects in the design realm, fanfare form a space for exploring visual language and spacious solutions. The activities of fanfare are composed of a diverse exhibition programme consisting of one-time shows, the serial exhibition programme /b/channel, the nomadic research programme fanfare inc., Parallels of the Equator and the additional podcast series tetatet.
Physical Publishing a talk by fanfare: With reference to restructured realities, and magical worlds the presentation by fanfare sets out on a visual self investigation, introducing a navigation of physical (infra)structures. Through introduction and instruction to the fanfare system, the talk address the display structure, as a playful consideration of ways to modify space, and activate physical publishing. Developed in 2014, the structure has functioned as a multifunctional tool, a framework, and an unpredictable trigger for ideas. With reference to theories of Flusser and in context of the workshop, the fanfare talk will direct attention to thoughts of remediating space, generating manoeuvres, and including actors.
Arthur Steiner is an art historian working at the crossroads of contemporary arts, design and technology. He is researching and fascinated by aesthetics in relation to petrocultures and the strategies that artists have employed in order to investigate oil and petro-modernity.
Over the years, he has developed projects across Africa, the Middle East and Asia and lived in Syria, Iran and Egypt. He is the founder of New Silk Roads Foundation. Through his work he has supported and helped to set up more than 20 art, design and technology spaces in old medinas and industrial zones along the spice, oil and data routes that are now connecting Asia and Africa.
He works at Hivos Foundation and has initiated the ‘ROOM Program’ and the ‘Force of Art research program’ with the Prince Claus Fund and the European Culture Foundation. Together with the British Council and Nesta he is setting up a support toolkit for creative hubs and art spaces.
In his hometown, Amsterdam, he is actively involved with the art space W139 and is organizing and curating exhibitions and lecture series in the Netherlands and around the world. The most recent one will be the Vertical Atlas research series, at Het Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam in Autumn 2018.
Leonardo Dellanoce is an art historian who explores technological realities with art and design as navigational tools. Collaboration is at the core of his practice, as he works with artists, spatial designers and theorists on a variety of projects. Among others, he is co-curating the research series Vertical Atlas: a Techno-political Cartography, on show at Het Nieuwe Instituut and Stedelijk Museum in Fall 2018. He also co-initiated Digital Earth, a global and decentralized fellowship for artists and designers from Asia and Africa investigating the materiality and immateriality of the digital reality. Currently, he is also editor of Archis/Volume where he co-initiated the long-term research project Trust in the Blockchain Society.
If aesthetic warfare is a truly global phenomenon, what are the geographic specificities of image manipulation, circulation and appropriation? Geography influences the way images are produced, manipulated, remixed and (mis) used. Aesthetic warfare will be an interactive presentation on how images, interfaces, memes, games and maps are shaping the way different realities are perceived in specific geographical zones.

Colm O'Neill is a designer and researcher based in Rotterdam and Brussels. His work is concerned with mediations of digital literacy through graphical, user and programmatic interfaces. The research and practice that result follow the ideals of free and open source development models.
Adversarial interfaces is a critical analysis the rhetoric of certain user interfaces – how user interfaces mediate digital literacy. With this analysis and critique the project proposes ways by which to practically and discursively adapt our understandings of computer and network infrastructures in the aim of resisting seamless integrations of software and interfaces as totalitised spaces with no alternatives and no outsides.
